News of the Week - January 20th

Hello OPA Champion families.  This is Mr. Bridges and Mrs. Merlette with some important reminders and a look at the week ahead.   Please review the following message for all of the activities for this week.

BYOD Chromebook Information: Important Message

In an effort to assure that all students in grades 3-8 have access to online resources and curriculum, Oxford Preparatory Academy will be loaning Chromebooks to any student in grades 3-8 who does not have access to his/her own Chromebook to use at school and home.  Chromebooks will be checked out to each student starting on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. In order for your student to check out a Chromebook, they must have the Chromebook Loaner Agreement signed and returned.

Any student wishing to bring their own personal Chromebook to school must go through the process of having the OPA management software installed on their Chromebook. If your Champion’s Chromebook has not gone through this process, please bring the Chromebook and the attached form to the front office.

Morning Drop-off and Pick-up Reminder: In an effort to be respectful neighbors to our community, and maintain student safety, we must be steadfast in our drop-off and pick-up routines. Let this serve as a gentle reminder to staff and parents, please do not make left-hand turns into the parking lot or drop-off lanes if you arrive to school from 8:15am-8:30am or during the afternoon for pick-up. Also, please do not park in any red zones or block our neighbors' driveways, and follow the directions of school personnel during drop-off and pick-up. We appreciate your cooperation.

Drop-off time is 8:10am or LATER. If you need to drop your Champions off prior to 8:10am, the YMCA is available to watch your children. There is no supervision prior to 8:10 am and children should not be without a parent on campus at that time. All students must be picked up before 3:30 M-TH and before 12:45 on Fridays, unless they have an after school activity.

*Students arriving at school after 8:40am must be accompanied by a parent and signed in at the front office to receive a tardy slip prior to going to class. Students arriving between 8:30am and 8:40am will still be marked tardy, but may report directly to class.

Per the Oxford Family Handbook It is also important to pick up students on time after school ends. Students remaining after traffic ceases will be taken to the school office. Parents will be called by OPA staff and directed to pick their child(ren). If after the school office closes, the student(s) still remains at school, OPA staff will call the police to ask that the child be picked up and placed in their care. OPA may also call child protective services.

Here are a couple of safety reminders that will keep traffic moving efficiently and more importantly keep our students safe. I have been out on patrol numerous times this school year and have noticed a few traffic safety issues.

  1. Pull up your vehicles as far as you possibly can to drop off your students, allowing the cars behind your room to drop off their students.
  2. If you’re getting out of your car and walking with your students, please don’t park and leave your car in the drop off area.
  3. Students who walk to school should be crossing the street in the crosswalk.
  4. Obey all traffic signs on and around school property.
  5. Slow down and drive extra cautiously in the parking lot and neighborhood.
  6. Don’t load or unload children across the street from the school.
  7. Don’t double park; it blocks visibility for other children and vehicles.
  8. Be prepared for kids to appear in unexpected places, like from between parked cars; if they’re on bikes, prepare for them to turn in front of you without looking or signaling.
  9. If you need to use your phone, be sure you’re pulled over safely.
  10. Watch for kids walking while looking at their phones. One study found that a full 20 percent of high school students cross the street while distracted.
  11. If possible, carpool to reduce the number of cars at school.
  12. Don’t ever block a crosswalk; it forces pedestrians to go around you and could put them in the path of moving traffic
